一.恰切 by chance; happen to
a. 我今天要出去的時候,外面恰巧開始下大雨.
b. 我和小花今天恰巧在超級市場見面.
二. 只好 have to
“只好” is used to indicate there is no other choice.
a. 我今天發高燒只好留在家裡休息.
b. 我今天忘記帶午飯,只好回家再吃東西.
三. 不是…就是 either…or; if not A…then B
“不是…就是” denotes a choice between two possibilities.
a. 哥哥不是在玩電腦就是在看電視.
b. 他上課不是在睡覺就是在玩電動玩具.
四. 除了….(以外) besides; apart from
“除了…(以外)” indicates an exception when it is followed by “都” in the second clause, but when it is followed by “還” or “也”, it is equivalent to “in addition to” or “besides” in English.
a. 她除了會畫畫以外,還會做各種各樣的事.
b. 小明除了會足球以外, 還會打籃球和打網球.
五. 卻 but
“卻” is often used after the subject of the second clause of a sentence. Like “可是” or “但是” it indicates a contrastive situation, but is used more often in writing.
a.這個學校人很多,可是參加足球隊的卻很少.
b. 我班上有很多聰明的學生, 可是可以回答老師的問題的學生卻很少.
六. 即使…也/還是 even if
“即使” is used with “也/還是” to express a hypothetical situation or concession.
a. 外面即使在下大雨我還是要走路回家.
b. 即使你給我很多禮物我還是不會原諒你.
七. “大都” and “大多數”
“大都” is an adverb. It can only be followed by a verb, adjective, or “是”. It cannot be followed by nouns. “大多數” can only be followed by a verb, adjective, or “是”. It can also be followed by nouns.
a. 現在的學生大都在學中文.
b. 我們學校大多數的人都能考進好大學.
